Ortega dresssed as a quinceañera: the origins of the viral image of the dictator of Nicaragua
A manipulated image of Daniel Ortega which circulated on social media as a meme hides a history of repression and protest

An image of the dictator Daniel Ortega dressed in a quinceaño dress has gone viral in social networks in Nicaragua. The illustration is a simple and critical parody: Ortega appears in a deliberately gross form in a voluminous rose colored gown, full of lace, beads, and floral appliqués which suggest a quinceaño dress.
The image, with other variants of Ortega in other dresses, accompanied by texts of condemnation, offenses and ridicule, circulated widely on networks since August 1 and are accompanied by a common message: it is the response of the opposition community of Nicaragua to the alleged arrest of a young adolescent girl in Matagalpa, accused of propagating false news for having shared the image this past July 19th.
The denouncement of the arrest emerged on social media and that is exactly where the response was produced. An adolescent, of unprecise age and whose identity is reserved, would have been arrested in Terrabona, Matagalpa, on July 19th, after propagating the image in rejection of the order of Ortega to abolish elections.
The Police of the regime, according to news published on sites and the pages of clandestine denouncers on Facebook and X, had identified the girl and forced her to erase the meme and her accounts on social media.
The family, according to the anonymous denouncements, received threats to not denounce the case or the girl would pay for the consequences in prison.
Nevertheless, the version of the adolescent arrested for ridiculing Ortega swept through the streets of Terrabona, went to the city of Matagalpa and on to social networks.
The original photo
The original photograph on which was placed the body with the quinceaños dress in reality was taken on Tuesday December 14, 2021 in the Palace of the Revolution in Habana, Cuba, one of the last public trips of the Nicaraguan dictator.
Ortega appears in the center, black sweatshirt and hatless, posing between the Castro leader Miguel Díaz-Canel on the right, and the foreign minister of the Cuban regime, Bruno Rodríguez, during the ALBA summit in 2021.
The veteran Cuban photographer Adalberto Roque Velásquez took the photo, chosen from a pool of international agencies, who shared it with France Press, EFE, Reuters and the AP.
According to a search of La Prensa in TinEye and Google Lens, in September 2023 the photo was cut to extract the face of Ortega in the wake of his offenses against the presidents of Chile, Gabriel Boric, and Colombia, Gustavo Petro.
That same portrait appeared again millions of times as a “file photo” in August 2024 when Ortega, once again livid, exploded with insults against the president of Brazil, Lula de Silva.
And this time, August 2026, the same image emerges, but rigged with AI, in wake of the supposed arrest of the Matagalpan adolescent.
Silence in Matagalpa
La Prensa consulted with an exiled journalist from northern Nicaragua, who published the news in his Facebook page, and he stated that “the girl is under arrest, not house arrest, she is in jail in Matagalpa.”
According to his investigations, the parents of the girl for years were Sandinistas, but their children and other relatives broke with the party in the wake of 2018.
Relatives of the young girl leaked the news of the arrest and the threats to keep silent about the case, or they would end up arrested if they made the situation public.
The Never Again Nicaraguan Human Rights Collective based in San José, Costa Rica, but with networks of clandestine collaborators in Nicaragua, said that they did not have confirmation about the denouncement about the girl, but that it would not be strange for the family not to publicly denounce it.
A spokesperson for the organization explained that from 2021 to now, news about forcibly disappeared people in Nicaragua has become a daily occurrence.
At the same time, she said that public denouncements have been decreasing because of the threats and direct reprisals of the security forces against the relatives of the victims.
Absurd arrests
Since 2018 the dictatorship if Nicaragua has jailed hundreds of people for reasons which in other parts of the world would be normal and not crimes.
For example: in November 2023 and for weeks after, the regime jailed several people for celebrating the victory in Miss Universe 2023 of Sheynnis Palacios; two young men were convicted and banished for painting a mural of her image and another one was convicted and lost his nationality for defending her on social networks from the criticism of official media.
In June 2024 a business woman was arrested and remained disappeared for 17 months for having a photo of Bishop Silvio Báez on her phone.
Another small business woman from Chichigalpa, Chinandega, was arrested on April 4, 2023 for silk screening a tshirt with the image of the Mot-Mot (the national bird of Nicaragua) and the slogan “April Lives”, “Long live free Nicaragua” in her silk screening business.
The journalist Victor Ticay was convicted and later expelled from the country for covering a “unauthorized” Catholic procession during Holy Week.
The list of absurd acts includes the house arrest of the very brother of Daniel Ortega, General Humberto Ortega, after giving an interview to the Argentinian media INFOBAE in May 2024. Humberto Ortega died as a political prisoner on September 30 of that same year.
